It's end for Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson?

Updated: 2007-06-06 17:09

HOLLYWOOD - Hollywood couple Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson have amicably
split, according to reports.

Kate Hudson (file photo)

The actors--who reportedly fell in love on the set of 2006's You, Me and
Dupree--parted ways at the end of last month for undisclosed reasons,
People.com claims.

A source adds, "They're still friends."

The reports come just weeks after Wilson's brothers Luke and Andrew sent
gossip columns into overdrive when they hinted the couple had wed in
secret during a radio interview.

When questioned about their relationship status, Andrew joked, "I thought
they were married already."

Reps for Hudson and Wilson have refused to comment on the split rumors.

Hudson is currently in divorce proceedings with estranged husband Chris
Robinson, whom she split from last August.

Victoria Beckham, Cameron Diaz, Robin Williams, Jessica Biel and Bruce
Willis were among the celebrities poised to pass the popcorn at Sunday's
16th annual MTV Movie Awards, but Lindsay Lohan planned to pass the show.

The actress, scheduled to be a presenter of the ceremony's distinctive
"Golden Popcorn" trophy before she checked into rehab last week, was
skipping the telecast, her publicist confirmed Friday.

Lohan sought treatment after a wild Memorial Day weekend during which she
crashed her Mercedes-Benz into a curb, was arrested for investigation of
driving under the influence and was photographed slumped in the passenger
seat of a friend's car.

Two "Dreamgirls" stars, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and Grammy winner
Beyonce Knowles, were in the running for best performance at the Sunday
night awards, scheduled for live broadcast on MTV from the Gibson
Amphitheatre in Universal City. Sarah Silverman was set to host.

Also nominated in the best performance category were Will Smith for "The
Pursuit of Happyness," Keira Knightley for "Pirates of the Caribbean:
Dead Man's Chest" and Gerard Butler for "300."

Smith's 9-year-old son, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith, was nominated for
breakthrough performance for his role opposite his father in "The Pursuit
of Happyness." Other nominees in that category included Justin Timberlake
for "Alpha Dog" and "Little Miss Sunshine" star Abigail Breslin.

Films nominated for best movie were "300," "Pirates of the Caribbean:
Dead Man's Chest," "Blades of Glory," "The Devil Wears Prada," "Little
Miss Sunshine" and "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit
Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan."

The blood-soaked "300" garnered a leading five nominations, followed by
"Dead Man's Chest" with four.

Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Borat, was up for three awards, including best
comedic performance, best fight (with Ken Davitian) and best kiss (with
Will Ferrell in "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby").

The MTV Movie Awards were chosen by fans, who voted online and by text
message.

LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Lohan's estranged father says she suffers from
multiple addictions, including alcohol and the painkiller OxyContin, the
Web site E! Online reported Wednesday.

The 20-year-old actress checked into rehab Monday following a weekend
that included crashing her Mercedes, being arrested for suspicion of
driving under the influence and being photographed slumped in the
passenger seat of a friend's car. This is her second rehab stint this
year.

"I'm satisfied they are doing the right thing for her, helping her detox
from painkillers and things," Michael Lohan told E! Online. "First she
needs to get clean, then she needs to let God in her life."

Lindsay Lohan's publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnik, did not immediately
return an after-hours call and e-mail from The Associated Press on
Wednesday.

Michael Lohan was released from a New York state prison in March after
serving almost two years for driving while intoxicated and other charges.
He said he is studying to become a drug-rehab counselor with the
faith-based organization Teen Challenge.

Before entering rehab, the actress was scheduled to start work this week
on "Poor Things," a comedy featuring Shirley MacLaine, who is also a
producer on the movie. MacLaine and co-producer Rob Hickman said in a
statement Wednesday that Lohan still wants to work on the project.

"We are trying to rearrange the shooting schedule to facilitate her
working at the end of the shoot to coincide with the completion of her
rehabilitation," the statement said.

In other events swirling around Lohan, who turns 21 on July 2,
authorities who have been conducting undercover operations at trendy
celebrity watering holes in recent weeks are seeking to find out if she
was served alcohol before her weekend car crash.

California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control investigators also
want to know if Lohan or others were served after hours, agency spokesman
John Carr said.

Videos show Lohan leaving Hollywood's Les Deux club at 3:30 a.m.

Alcohol cannot be served in California after 2 a.m.

The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control told the Beverly Hills
Police Department it wants to review witness reports and other evidence
to determine if a formal investigation is warranted, Carr said.

Les Deux owner Lonnie Moore said in a statement that Lohan stayed late
having dinner and waiting for friends, and wasn't drinking.

Movie star Jessica Alba has offered to pay all her female cousins'

The sexy star has put aside cash to cover her relatives' further

She says, "Seeing all these girls who are uneducated - it's not fair.
They deserve just as much of a chance to contribute to society as anybody

"Because they're poor, they're not given the tools. They have no freaking

Clooney sells kisses in Cannes

(ITN)
Updated: 2007-05-25 11:38

George Clooney has been selling kisses for charity in Cannes and it
appears that they don't come cheap.

A smooch with the Hollywood heartthrob was sold for $750,000 (378,000)
at a charity auction, but despite the price the winning bidder wasn't
complaining.

The annual amfAR event was hosted by actress Sharon Stone, who made a
very glamorous and surprisingly professional auctioneer.

She proved there was no end to her talents as she joined Kylie Minogue on
stage to perform Can't Get You Out Of My Head, although it seems doubtful
they'll be releasing a duets album anytime soon.

The charity bash was bursting at the seams with glamour as Clooney and
Stone were joined by the rest of the Ocean's 13 cast and numerous other
celebs including Mischa Barton, Naomi Campbell, Catherine Deneuve, John
Galliano, and Elle Macpherson to name just a few.

The amfAR event, which supports Aids research charges between 15,000
and 50,000 per table and is believed to have raised a reported 3.7
million for charity.

HSK Exam - Russian film on Litvinenko added to Cannes festival at last minute

Russian film on Litvinenko added to Cannes festival at last minute

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-05-23 19:08

CANNES, France - In a surprise move, the Cannes film festival on
Wednesday announced it would screen a Russian documentary about the
poisoning death of former spy Alexander Litvinenko.

"Rebellion: The Litvinenko Case", which will be shown at special
screenings Saturday, on the eve of the close of the 12-day filmfest, was
shot by Andrei Nekrasov and Olga Konskaya.

Nekrasov was close to Litvinenko, who died in London on November 23 last
year.

The documentary film-maker, who spent two years working on the movie,
shot footage right up until Litvinenko's last days in hospital.

The widow of the dead agent, Marina Litvinenko, is flying into Cannes for
the special screenings, said the distributors of the film, Rezo.

The almost two-hour long movie contains interviews with former KGB agents
and is highly critical of the Russian authorities, a Rezo official told
AFP.

A fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Litvinenko was
poisoned with the radioactive isotope polonium 210 early last November in
London and died within three weeks.

He accused Moscow of being behind his poisoning in a letter released
after his death.

The ex-agent, who had been granted political asylum in Britain and
formally became a British citizen last year, was administered large doses
of polonium 210.

Britain has asked Russia to extradite ex-KGB man Andrei Lugovoi to charge
him with murder in the case.

Cannes festival art director Thierry Fremaux said the documentary will be
released officially late Saturday with screenings earlier for the media.

Sienna Miller loses control

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-05-21 15:30

They say that once you've learned to ride a bike, you never forget.

But it looks as if Sienna Miller could do with a helping hand as she
struggles to keep steady on two wheels.

The 25-year-old actress even appeared to come a cropper and ended up with
a nasty cut on her forehead.

So far so good for Sienna as she films a scene for 'The Edge of Love'

Ouch! Sienna runs into trouble...and they say once you learn to ride a
bike you never forget

Fortunately, it was all in the line of work. Sienna was filming a scene
for her latest movie and her painful-looking injury was simply make-up.
And any particularly risky activity on the bike was performed by a stunt
double.

Sienna was pictured in New Quay, West Wales, where work is under way on
The Edge Of Love.

The movie is about a love triangle in the life of Dylan Thomas. Matthew
Rhys plays the Welsh poet, Sienna is his wife Caitlin and Keira Knightley
plays Thomas's childhood friend Vera Killick. The film is due to be
released next year.

Sienna with an 'injury'

During filming, Sienna's blonde locks have been turned red and she has
ditched her usual bohemian look for a more traditional Forties style.

Wearing a light blue, knee-length dress, a light grey woolly cardigan and
sensible pump-style shoes, the actress looked every inch the wartime
housewife.

But the look is not likely to be one the actress intends to promote with
the launch of her new clothing line in September.

Sienna is following in the footsteps of Kate Moss, Lily Allen, Madonna
and Kylie Minogue by making her mark on the world of fashion. She is
teaming up with her sister Savannah to launch their own fashion line,
called Twenty8Twelve.

Chinese Mandarin - Johnny Depp: My family is my treasure

ENTERTAINMENT / Movies

Johnny Depp: My family is my treasure

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-05-18 10:26

In a highly personal interview, Johnny Depp explains why playing the
pirate Captain Jack Sparrow has helped him finally find the reason he
wants to live.

When I first met Johnny Depp, he was not bankable, certainly not
box-office gold. He ticked all the bad boy boxes. Edgy, dark, an outsider
who was attracted to the strangely gothic - the sad-eyed Edward
Scissorhands, the transvestite director Ed Wood, the drug dealer in Blow.

He ripped up hotel rooms, and when the paparazzi lurked outside the
Mirabelle restaurant in London to get a shot of his girlfriend Vanessa
Paradis's pregnant tummy, he walloped them with a plank of wood.

Depp says that the birth of his daughter Lily-Rose, now seven, 'was not
only the greatest thing that's ever happened - it's the only thing that's
ever happened to me'

It was that pregnant tummy that changed everything. It caused a seismic
shift.

When Depp became a dad, he became the person he always wanted to be:
calm, happy, loving and loved.

That manifested itself in his most iconic role: Jack Sparrow in the
blockbuster trilogy Pirates Of The Caribbean, the final instalment of
which -Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End - opens here next
Thursday.

The character he created took its inspiration from raddled Keith Richards
and cartoon skunk sexpot Pepe Le Pew: mischievous rather than villainous,
all glittering gold teeth and high-polished camp.

When we meet this time, in a sterile hotel room in Los Angeles, Depp's
charisma and teeth sparkle.

He's still filming a few scenes for Pirates, and the teeth are still on,
but now they look as if they belong.

Johnny Depp, the man, has merged with Jack Sparrow, the character.

He is no longer miserable, dark, anaesthetised with drugs. He is bright,
sparky and children-friendly.

Jack Sparrow has been the greatest gift. It's hard to remember when
Johnny was the outsider.

He's wearing horn-rimmed glasses today and a battered felt trilby.

Chinese Speaking - Review: Third 'Shrek' feels hackneyed

ENTERTAINMENT / Review

Review: Third 'Shrek' feels hackneyed

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-15 08:47

"Shrek the Third" begins with a death, and from there the movie itself
steadily dies. The third installment in this monster of an animated
franchise still subverts the fairy tales we grew up knowing and loving,
but it's smothered in a suffocating sense of been-there, done-that.

Thankfully, as the films go along, they rely less on gratuitous
pop-culture references. And visually this "Shrek" is more dazzling than
ever, especially in the realistic background details. The water looks
watery and the sand looks sandy and the trees look so lush and leafy you
could practically jump out of your seat and climb into one of them. By
now it's probably easy for all of us to take for granted how far CGI
technology has come, and it's worth stopping to appreciate for a moment.

But part three also lacks the zip of its predecessors; it feels draggy
and, at the same time, rushed. (At 86 minutes, it's also the shortest
film in the series.) Except for a few moments here and there, such as
Prince Charming's gleefully corny stage productions and a Gingerbread Man
flashback montage, much of the original sense of ingenious fun is gone.

It doesn't help that so many tired "Shrek" wannabes, like "Hoodwinked"
and "Happily N'Ever After," have been trotted out in recent years, making
the real thing feel just as hackneyed. Chris Miller, previously a story
artist, co-directed with animator Raman Hui. About a half-dozen people
are credited as having contributed to the script, including Andrew
Adamson, who directed the first two "Shrek" flicks. So there is a sense
of consistency it just doesn't feel all that fresh anymore.

This time, the lovably cranky ogre Shrek (voiced reliably as always by
Mike Myers) struggles with the prospect of becoming king of Far, Far Away
after the death of King Harold, the father of his bride, Fiona ( Cameron
Diaz). He'd rather stay home in the swamp, lazing around all day.

(Why Fiona can't take over in a fairy-tale land where the all the other
rules have been upended is never addressed. She is the more even-tempered
and levelheaded of the two, after all. Perhaps if Hillary were president
....)

Anyway, Shrek sets out with his chatty sidekick Donkey ( Eddie Murphy)
and the suave Puss in Boots ( Antonio Banderas, still an adorable
scene-stealer) to find the only other possible heir to the throne: the
nerdy, insecure Artie, Fiona's teenage cousin, who is voiced by Justin
Timberlake and looks like Corey Feldman.

Artie is always on the receiving end of Lancelot's athletic jousts and is
otherwise the butt of everyone's jokes at his medieval high school the
irony being, of course, that Timberlake has long been the coolest kid in
the class. So when Shrek and his pals show up and offer him the kingdom,
he's only to happy to take it. At first.

Meanwhile, with hubby away, Fiona is left to defend the castle from
Prince Charming ( Rupert Everett), the vain former suitor she once jilted
who has now come back to stage a bloody coup with a posse of vanquished
villains (Captain Hook, the Evil Queen, etc.).

Fiona who's pregnant with the baby Shrek isn't sure he's ready for
gets some unexpected help on her end from longtime damsels in distress
Snow White ( Amy Poehler), Cinderella ( Amy Sedaris), Rapunzel ( Maya
Rudolph) and Sleeping Beauty ( Cheri Oteri), as well as her mother, Queen
Lillian ( Julie Andrews).

It's a clever idea to have these characters transcend their stereotypes,
but with the exception of Poehler's demanding diva, they all feel tossed
in and underused. Like "Spider-Man 3," "Shrek the Third" throws more at
us including plenty of barf and flatulence jokes for the kids but
too little of it actually sticks.

"Shrek the Third," a Paramount Pictures release, is rated PG for some
crude humor, suggestive content and swashbuckling action. Running time:
86 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Spend holiday at "home parties"

(chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2007-04-28 10:46

The 7-day May Day holiday will arrive very soon, and many office workers
in Beijing have decided to stay here to enjoy themselves at "home
parties", instead of exhausting travels.

Susan (not her real name), a freelancer, plans to invite her friends to
see movies, sing karaoke together or even host a photo exhibition in her
apartment."Everywhere else will be overcrowded during the holiday, " said
Susan. "At home, I'll treat my friends to homemade dishes, for I myself
have been eating too much fast food recently."

Unlike "home parties" in the past, which were the last option of
entertainment for many people, white collars nowadays enjoy such parties
because they appreciate the simple and calm lifestyle, having felt tired
of the bustle and hustle of urban life.

"I feel very comfortable at home parties, for every one else around are
my good friends, and I can eat and drink to my heart's content," said
Jing.

"Maybe we will host a brain dumping first to collect good ideas to host
innovative home parties," said Joey (not his real name), who works for an
advertising agency. Joey believes "home parties" will help him extend his
interpersonal relations, while he can relax thoroughly.

Many young people will host such parties by turns with friends in the
forthcoming 7-day holiday.

Fracture

When Ted Crawford discovers that his beautiful younger wife, Jennifer, is
having an affair, he plans her murder--the perfect murder. Among the cops
arriving at the crime scene is hostage negotiator Detective Rob Nunally,
the only officer permitted entry to the house. Surprisingly, Crawford
readily admits to shooting his wife, but Nunally is too stunned to pay
close attention when he recognizes his lover, whose true identity he
never knew, lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Although Jennifer was
shot at point blank range, Nunally realizes she isn't dead. Crawford is
immediately arrested and arraigned after confessing--a seemingly
slam-dunk case for hot shot assistant district attorney Willy Beachum,
who has one foot out the door of the District Attorney's office on his
way to a lucrative job in high-stakes corporate law. But nothing is as
simple as it seems, including this case. Will the lure of power and a
love affair with a sexy, ambitious attorney at his new firm overpower
Willy's fierce drive to win, or worse, quash his code of ethics? In a
tense duel of intellect and strategy, Crawford and Willy both learn that
a "fracture" can be found in every ostensibly perfect facade.

"National Treasure."[AFP]

Oscar-winning British actress Helen Mirren is to play Nicolas Cage's mum
in the sequel to his 2004 box office hit "National Treasure," the
industry press said Thursday.

Mirren, fresh from scooping the best actress award at this year's Oscars
for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen", will take the
role of the mother of Benjamin Gates, played by Cage.

The new romp entitled "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" has Gates
seeking to unlock the truth behind the 1865 assassination of US president
Abraham Lincoln, Variety magazine said.

Other stars signed up for the Disney family flick include Ed Harris, Jon
Voight and Harvey Keitel.

"National Treasure," which came out in 2004, was one of the top 10 films
of the year at the US box office, raking in some 173 million dollars, and
picking up a similar amount abroad.

Monday, March 19, 2007, in New York, to begin community service as
punishment for having hit one of her employees with a telephone. The
36-year-old supermodel was expected to push a broom or mop at the
Manhattan garage to fulfill her sentence for community service for
throwing a cell phone at her maid over a pair of missing jeans.[AP photo]

NEW YORK - Naomi Campbell, wearing black stilettos and slinging dark work
boots over her shoulder, traded the catwalk for community service Monday
at a sanitation garage to start a five-day sentence for assaulting her
maid.

The 36-year-old supermodel arrived at the Manhattan District 3 Garage at
Pier 36 on the Hudson in a black sport utility vehicle. She'll be pushing
a broom or mop at the garage for her guilty plea to misdemeanor assault
for throwing a cell phone at her maid over a pair of missing jeans.

Campbell was met by a garage official who escorted her through the
building's dirty, steel double doors. She also wore chocolate brown
pants, a short fitted coat with a flared bottom, dark sunglasses and a
newsboy-type cap over a short hairdo.

She didn't acknowledge the horde of assembled media.

"Miss Campbell arrived on time to work. She came ready to work," Albert
Durrell, deputy chief of the Department of Sanitation, told reporters at
a briefing outside the facility.

It's the same sanitation depot where former Culture Club frontman Boy
George performed his five-day community service stint in August. He
pleaded guilty for falsely reporting a burglary at his lower Manhattan
apartment. The responding officers found cocaine instead.

Unlike George, who performed his duties outdoors in full view of TV
cameras, Campbell will work inside the garage. She was issued protective
gloves, dust mask and reflective orange vest.

"We have plenty of work for her to do over the next five days," Durrell
said.

Because of her celebrity status, sanitation police officers will be
stationed at each entrance of the facility, Durrell said.

Campbell, who has a reputation for angry outbursts, pleaded guilty in
January for hitting Ana Scolavino in the back of the head with the phone
last March. Scolavino was treated for a head injury.

In exchange for her guilty plea, Campbell was ordered to pay Scolavino's
medical expenses of $363, do five days of community service and attend a
two-day anger-management program.

Courtney Love sued by rehab center

(AP)

SANTA ANA, Calif. - A drug rehabilitation center has sued Courtney Love,
claiming the singer has repeatedly refused to pay her $181,000 bill for
her stay there 1 1/2 years ago.

The lawsuit, filed March 1 in Orange County Superior Court, said Love
paid $10,000 when she entered Beau Monde, an oceanfront retreat in
Newport Beach, in August 2005, but she still owes $181,286.

"Although demanded multiple times by plaintiff, orally and in writing,
none of the balance stated has been paid," the lawsuit said.

Love's attorney, Howard Weitzman, said Friday the lawsuit "will be
resolved to the satisfaction of all parties shortly."

A phone message left for Beau Monde's attorney was not immediately
returned.

Love, 42, the widow of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain and former frontwoman
of the rock band Hole, has battled substance abuse and said in December
she would remain committed to her sobriety.

In September 2005, Love was sentenced to 180 days at a drug treatment
facility for violating probation in three misdemeanor cases one for
illegal possession of painkillers, one for being under the influence of a
controlled substance in public, and another for assault and battery.

Some of her time about 11 weeks was spent at Beau Monde, according
to court documents.

The facility describes its mission on its Web site as helping "very
successful, high profile individuals who are struggling with substance
abuse, addictions, compulsive behavior, burnout, and other life/health
issues." Guests are treated to gourmet meals, yoga and massages, and are
allowed to leave the center for field trips such as golfing and hiking.

The three misdemeanor cases were dismissed by a judge who also terminated
her probation.

Helen Mirren, who won the best actress Oscar for playing Queen Elizabeth
II in "The Queen," may be invited to tea, Buckingham Palace said Monday.

The film's director, Stephen Frears, has already suggested that he,
Mirren and screenwriter Peter Morgan would visit the queen at the palace
next month.

"It is speculation, but we are looking at a number of options," a palace
spokeswoman said Monday.

Mirren won the Oscar on Sunday night in Los Angeles for playing the
monarch in "The Queen," which retells the aftermath of the death of
Diana, Princess of Wales, in a car crash 10 years ago.

Drew Barrymore: No flash for Letterman

Drew Barrymore at the New York

David Letterman can't forget the night Drew Barrymore flashed him nearly
12 years ago. In a "Late Show" appearance in 1995, the actress famously
danced on Letterman's desk for his birthday and briefly bared her breasts
with her back to the camera.

Letterman reminded her of this when they chatted on Monday's CBS
late-night talk show, saying, "You've got a birthday coming up. ... You
know, I've got a birthday coming up as well."

"I remember celebrating your birthday one year," said Barrymore, who
turns 32 on Feb. 22.

"That was great," replied Letterman, who will be 60 on April 12. "Now is
there a chance that you might do anything like that again?"

Barrymore said that's not likely.

"Turning 32, I think I'm not a different person 'cause I'm certainly, you
know, as wild and free-spirited as ever, but I'm just really glad I had
that opportunity and got that out of my system, because I'm not so sure
if ..."

"... You don't think you'd do it now is what you're saying," Letterman
said.

A seemingly wistful Letterman thanked Barrymore for the water cooler
moment.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity. It was lovely," he said. "And
it's still something I think about and talk about and tell my friends."

Barrymore stars in the new romantic comedy "Music and Lyrics," a Warner
Bros. Picture release.

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

It was really cheap-a cheap - all the way!

By Ken Mcmanus (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-02-02 09:12

Christmas in February is not a new concept for me. Often I'm not able to
go back to the United States to see family and friends in December, when
everyone else goes. So, in preparation for going back, I did my Christmas
shopping on Sunday. How's that for a time warp?

My favorite is Hongqiao Market near the Temple of Heaven, and when I go,
I always take my two best Chinese friends with me. They do the bargaining
because I'm terrible at it. Maybe it's a cultural thing.

If you've ever been to Bali in Indonesia, you know it's quite a holiday
spot. They're friendly, almost everyone speaks English (because it's
where Australians like to holiday, I guess) but if you make a bad deal
with a vendor, you have only yourself to blame.

When you walk into the store, they smile and ask what country you're
from. Somehow the answer "America" produces a bigger smile and even a
little drool.

In fact, the Bali vendors' bag color-coding system is an open secret;
they indicate to one another how good a bargainer you are by the color of
bag in which they put your purchase. A white bag meant you were a
pushover, black meant you were a tough bargainer, and they even had
striped bags to indicate something in between. My first bag was striped
because I knew I had to haggle; I just wasn't good enough at it.

And that's why I hate doing it, but that's life as a foreigner shopping
at Hongqiao bargain or die (financially). So, that's why Eric and Cathy
(their English names) go along.

Stop No 1 was my favorite jewelry stall on the third floor. Bonnie is a
delightful woman from Guangdong who speaks enough English to answer my
questions and understand what I want. I bought pearls for my best friend
and a cousin from her, so when the best friend asked me to bring jade
beads for her jewelry-making hobby, I knew exactly where I wanted to
start my search.

Bonnie remembered me. Out came the water bottles for her "preferred"
customers, and the mating dance began. Eric explained what I wanted, and
it was really no problem. Bonnie doesn't deal in loose jade, but in the
great Chinese tradition of guanxi (connections) where everyone knows
someone, she found some, and I bought nine strands for 600 yuan ($75) in
maybe 30 minutes.

Next was a jade carving for another good friend. We wandered around, and
I discovered there actually is a thing as a bad day for the vendors at
Hongqiao. But I was surprised by the woman's pre-emptory strike.

"How much?" I asked in Chinese for a jade dragon. She said 150 yuan
($18), but after one exchange with Eric, the price was 60 yuan ($7.5).
Why? She told Eric she hadn't sold anything all day and was desperate.

It actually happens yahoo!

It happened again on the second floor, where I looked for a silk robe for
a friend in New Mexico. Suddenly, a 220 yuan ($27) offer for a reversible
black-blue number was 100 yuan ($12.5). I couldn't say "sold!" fast
enough.

I couldn't find the right silk tie for another cousin until I was near
the exit door a black one with a golden dragon pattern. You can tell I
like dragons, right?

Anyway, 100 kuai became 40 kuai ($5), and I was done shopping in two
hours.

In Bali, I'd have had all black bags.

Chinese Mandarin - Brit Oscars bow to Queen, Bond

Brit Oscars bow to Queen, Bond

(E! Online)
Updated: 2007-01-14 14:23

Los Angeles - Would the so-called British Oscars snub Queen Elizabeth and
her loyal subject James Bond?

Not bloody well likely.

The royal-examining The Queen claimed 10 nominations, and the
007-relaunching Casino Royale nabbed nine to lead all comers as the field
for the Orange British Academy Film Awards was announced Friday.

The U.K.-centric nominations made the six nominations scored by the great
American tragedy United 93, heretofore a hit-and-miss awards-show
contender, all the more remarkable. Until, that is, one was reminded that
writer-director Paul Greengrass, nominated for Best Director and Original
Screenplay, is, like Queen Elizabeth and Bond, available for afternoon
tea, as it were.

Not every Brit, however, was a shoo-in. London-born, Cambridge-educated
Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat was nowhere to be found among the nominees.

Having better luck, despite their utter lack of Britishness: the Mexican
fable Pan's Labyrinth, up for eight awards; and the Hollywood hit The
Departed, and the dysfunctional-American-family comedy Little Miss
Sunshine, both up for six.

Informally known as the British Oscars, or the BAFTAs (for the
show-sponsoring British Academy of Film and Television Arts), the Orange
British Academy Film Awards are considered the most prestigious trophies
of trophy season not presented in Hollywood.

All of this means Helen Mirren now will have a chance to accept trophies
on two continents.

The Globe-nominated star of The Queen, having swept the U.S. critics
awards for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in crisis, will vie for
BAFTA's Best Actress trophy opposite Volver's Penlope Cruz, Notes on a
Scandal's Judi Dench, The Devil Wears Prada's Meryl Streep and Little
Children's Kate Winslet.

If that lineup doesn't look familiar, it will. Come Monday, all five
actors will be up for Golden Globes, although Streep will compete as a
comedy performer.

New James Bond Daniel Craig didn't win over Globe voters, but he did just
fine with BAFTA ones. His work in Casino Royale puts him in the
heavyweight Best Actor category with The Departed's Leonardo DiCaprio,
The History Boys' Richard Griffiths, Venus' Peter O'Toole and, per usual,
The Last King of Scotland's Forest Whitaker.

Dreamgirls, meanwhile, apparently didn't translate overseas. The
Oscar-contending musical, ostensibly about the rise of Detroit's Motown
Records, notched only two BAFTA nominations: one for Jennifer Hudson's
hard-to-ignore supporting turn as a spurned singer and one for composer
Henry Krieger's music.

Movies that got more love from BAFTA voters included Babel, The Departed,
The Last King of Scotland, Little Miss Sunshine and The Queen, all up for
Best Film.

A win for The Departed would be a win for BAFTA-approved producer Brad
Pitt, also a star of Babel. (As reported last week, Pitt likely won't be
up for an Academy Award for The Departed because the Producers Guild of
America has judged that only one of the film's three producers, Graham
King, should be deigned worthy of such an honor.)

Martin Scorsese, who knows about hard luck at the Oscars, will seek his
second BAFTA as Best Director for The Departed. His competition: United

Chinese School - Home bubble baths

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

Home bubble baths

(lifestyle.com)
Updated: 2006-12-31 12:44

In winter, people are always trying to keep warm, and one of the best
ways to do it is to take a bath. The warm water, the bubbles, the
privacy, all of this comes together to create a truly relaxing
environment.

Doctors recommend bubble baths as an effective way to increase body
temperature, increase blood circulation and up metabolism. So why not
take a relaxing bubble bath every day and enjoy the benefits?

Before the bath

Before you take a bubble bath, there are some things you should do to
prepare:

1) Open the windows in your bathroom and let the air circulate for about
one hour. Then close the windows and light up an Aroma Lamp.

2) Put one or two spoons of salt into the running water as it fills the
tub, This regulates the PH balance in the water.

3) Put several drops of bubble bath gel on your palm and put your hand
under the faucet. The running water will wash off the gel and the tub
will fill with bubbles.

4) Use a small bath brush to thoroughly clean and massage your body.

Tips for bubble bath

1) In the bath, move your legs in a circular motion, like you are riding
a bike. Doing this about fifty times increases blood circulation and also
helps keep you in shape.

2) Use a scrub wash to remove dead skin cells. Using scrubs can also
enhance the effectiveness of other body care products. Since scrub washes
are rough, don't use them on your face.

3) After the bath, apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp. This
allows your skin to absorb more moisture and raises your skin's
metabolism, increasing your temperature.

Chinese Speaking - All I want for Christmas...

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

All I want for Christmas...

By Catherine Cook (That's Beijing)
Updated: 2006-12-20 09:48

"I'll probably go," said a DJ friend when asked about Sasha's second gig
at Fusion on October 31. "Although Beijing's nightlife scene doesn't
inspire me very much these days."

And understandably so. Beijing is currently gripped by a trend for themed
events-Pimps and Hos, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Traffic Light and Pyjama
Parties... anyone? No? Us neither. Forget gimmicks: Sasha alone was
reason for a thousand-plus people to flock to Fusion for a set from the
world renowned DJ-and there wasn't a nightie in sight.

If only he'd bothered to turn up.

On October 20, at 2.30am when his no-show was finally announced, all hell
broke loose. However, clubbers' dissatisfaction was less to do with
Sasha's absence and more as a result of the atrocious way the club
handled the night, highlighting the problems that affect every club in
the city.

With this in mind, tbj has compiled its Christmas wish list of the things
we'd like changed in clubland for 2007.

Cleaning staff
We'd like to see less staff getting in the bloody way. On a recent trip
to Coco Banana we positioned ourselves at the bar and, in the space of 15
minutes, counted seven members of staff (complete with dust pan and
brush) circuiting the club, bumping into everyone and pissing off paying
customers. We know these poor attendants are just doing their job, but
surely they'd be better put to use as...

Barstaff
Can it please take less than 20 minutes to get served? Does anyone know
why at least three people are needed to serve one drink? I recently
ordered a Bacardi Breezer thinking I'd get served faster than if I'd
ordered a mixed drink, like my friend. Did I get my drink first? No. Did
they bring me the flavor of Breezer I asked for? No. Training staff in
these clubs to serve a drink quickly and efficiently makes for happier
clubbers.

The dancefloor
Without the dancefloor, the DJ's work is obsolete. Henceforth, we wish to
have the dancefloor off-limits to: wait staff, cleaners, security, DJ
trainspotters, all non-dancers and that bloody annoying camera man who
climbs onto the stage at every Yen party and makes a complete knob of
himself-you know who you are.

Ticket prices
Price gouging has become so common in Beijing, we've come to expect it.
The reason clubs mark the price for an event as "TBD" is because they're
making it up as they go along. If you paid RMB 300 (as opposed to RMB
100) for Tiesto at Coco Banana or RMB 300 rather than RMB 100 for Sasha
at Fusion (and he didn't show... ouch) then you'll know what I'm talking
about.

The DJ List
The DJ List is a website compiled for people who know nothing about dance
music and wish to be conversant in it. That's not to say that those who
aren't in the top ten don't deserve to be, but we're bored of those DJs.
We'd like to see clubs invite interesting acts who are pioneers in their
field, or creating exciting sets and producing their own music. In fact,
we'll take anyone as long as they don't play trance or progressive house.

Finally, if you're going to be spending New Year's Eve in this fair city,
we suggest you head to the Yen Countdown party. Quite frankly, nobody
does it better than Yen, who consistently show us how it should be done.
They treat the space like a blank canvas where the lights, VJs and the
DJs come together in harmony leaving you enough space to just dance and
enjoy the music. And it only takes one person to serve you at the bar. To
that we say "hurrah!" and wish you a happy clubbing New Year!

Pnyin - Three steps to beat sensitive skin!

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

Three steps to beat sensitive skin!

(lifestyle)
Updated: 2006-12-06 14:43

December is here, and cold, dry weather is close on its heels. Winter can
be hard for those with sensitive skin, and even those who don't may see
their skin suffer from the weather, stress and lack of sleep.

Winter can be especially hard on sensitive skin, but with these easy
steps you will be on your way to protecting your most visible asset.

Step 1: Know what you're dealing with

If you want to know how to deal with sensitive skin, the first step is to
know exactly what sensitive skin is.

Sensitive skin is not temporary. So whether your inflamed skin is a
result of a food allergy or applying a different kind of cosmetic, it
still does not clearly indicate if you have sensitive skin. But if you
have tried many different kinds of cosmetics and your skin is still red,
dry or breaking out, then you might have sensitive skin. Take the test
below to find out.

1. Your skin is extremely dry.

2. You always feel stressed.

3. The skin cutin is very thin and hypodermal capillaries are easily
seen.

4. When the seasons change, your skin becomes inflamed and itches.

5. Your skin is very sensitive to all external changes or stimulations,
like cosmetics, metal jewelries and even clothing.

6. You get red spots on your face after youve been drinking alcohol.

If you have two or more of the symptoms mentioned above, you may have
sensitive skin!

A scholarly lecture trend sweeps

Let's go to a lecture! In Beijing, attending public educational lectures
given by scholars is becoming something of a cultural fashion, similar to
how theatre-goers can feel uncomfortable if they miss even one drama.
While theatre brings entertainment to its audiences, lectures bring their
devotees knowledge, confidence and happiness.

Even the chilly November wind in Beijing fails to stop people's footsteps
moving from one scholarly lecture to another. Attending these lectures
has become a way of life.

Wang Zhikun, 55, has a well-planned-out timetable for cultural lectures.
Saturday morning, Peking university; Sunday morning, the National Library
of China, and the Science & Technology Museum; Sunday afternoon, The
Capital Library... Wang usually goes to four or five lectures a week.

Ms. Tian, 44, in addition to taking notes for the lectures, will also
record them. "My son described me like this: I am either listening to the
lectures, or on my way to the lectures."

On campus, students are not lagging behind in this trend. "The importance
of lectures is even greater than having classes."

"Society not only needs entertainment," one internet user, A Sen, wrote
on his blog. "The many varieties of lectures bring spiritual
satisfaction, and what's more, they also broaden people's horizons,
teaching them to learn and be able to explain all kinds of cultural
phenomena on the shoulders of scholars."

Study Chinese - Massage prevailing among women

Massage prevailing among women

(chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2006-11-02 12:41

Massage shops were previously considered as men's domain, but now are
serving more and more women in Nanning, capital city of south China's
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Traditional Chinese massage can provide both health and skin care as well
as help people relieve fatigue through knock, pinch and tap. It was ever
linked with pornographic industry, but after years of powerful
regulation, now it has become popular among the common people as a
relaxation style. Especially, it is welcomed by many beauty-pursuing
ladies.

"Yue'e Health Care Center" is a simple massage shop. When you walk into
the room, you will be greeted by a faint aroma of traditional Chinese
medicine and the sound of tapping. On many white and clean beds, clients
are lying on their stomach or back or with one side on top, accepting
relaxative massage. Rough statistics show that there are normally more
female clients here than male.

"Several years ago, most of massagists are young girls and most of
clients are men, but now the situation has been reversed," said Wu
Yichong, a male massagist in the shop. People have begun to see this
industry in a new light. With a long history in China as a way for beauty
care and pressure relief, massage actually has become young Chinese
women's new favorite.
