AT&T errs in edit of anti-Bush lyrics

at Grant Park in Chicago on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007.[AP]

?

Lyrics performed by Pearl Jam criticizing President Bush should not have
been censored from a webcast by AT&T Inc., a company spokesman
acknowledged Thursday.

AT&T, through its Blue Room entertainment site, offered a webcast of the
band's headlining performance Sunday at Lollapalooza in Chicago. The
event was shown with a brief delay so the company could bleep out
excessive profanity or nudity.

But monitors hired by AT&T through a vendor went further and cut two
lines from a song to the tune of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the
Wall." One was "George Bush, leave this world alone" the second time it
was sung, and the other was "George Bush find yourself another home,"
according to the band's Web site.

AT&T spokesman Michael Coe said that the silencing was a mistake and that
the company was working with the vendor that produces the webcasts to
avoid future misunderstandings. He said AT&T was working to secure the
rights to post the entire song 鈥 part of a sing-along with the audience
鈥 on the Blue Room site.

Blue Room offers live concerts, sports interviews, video game advice and
other entertainment content that requires a high-speed Internet
connection. Although viewing the content is free, San Antonio-based AT&T
uses the site as a way to promote its DSL broadband services.

Besides Pearl Jam's show, AT&T showed 21 other performances ranging from
Pete Yorn to G. Love and Special Sauce during the three-day Lollapalooza
music festival. Coe said no other complaints have been made about
censoring.

Pearl Jam said in a posting on its Web site that in the future, it would
work harder to ensure live broadcasts or webcasts are "free from
arbitrary edits."

"If a company that is controlling a webcast is cutting out bits of our
performance 鈥 not based on laws, but on their own preferences and
interpretations 鈥 fans have little choice but to watch the censored
version," they said.

The alternative rock band and Internet advocates were also using the
incident to try to draw attention to the prospects of Internet service
providers like AT&T deciding to give preferential treatment to content
they favor or have deals with, leaving the rest on slower-moving Internet
bandwidths.

Jenny Toomey, executive director of the Future of Music Coalition, said
that although net neutrality wasn't being violated in this case, it still
raises questions about whether AT&T and other service providers can be
trusted not to hurt artists.

Internet speeds that depend only on the size of files, not the kind of
content that's in them, is a democratizing force, she said.

"We've got to protect that, and artists get that," Toomey said.

AT&T and other providers would like the ability to charge more for
transmitting certain kinds of data, like live video, faster or more
reliably than other data but have insisted such premium services would
help, not hurt, consumers.

Coe said, regardless, the issue of net neutrality is entirely separate
from the mistake during the Pearl Jam show.

"This was our own Web site," he noted.

Hanks suing production company over unpaid profits

(IANS)
Updated: 2007-08-08 19:31

Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Tom Hanks is suing production company Gold
Circle Films for failing to pay him his share of the profits from the hit
film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

Tom has teamed up with his co-producers from the 2002 film - his wife
Rita Wilson and Gary Goetzman - along with leading actress Nia Vardalos,
to launch the legal action against the company, World Entertainment News
Network reported.

The producers claim Gold Circle has so far avoided an audit to specify
exact revenue from 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding', instead providing accounts
that are 'vague and inadequate in failing to provide information
consistent with industry standards'.

Learning Mandarin - Indian film focuses on women in 2002 riot

Indian film focuses on women in 2002 riot

(AP)
Updated: 2007-08-07 17:07

The horrors of one of India's worst religious riots have come alive in a
new film that focuses on the atrocities through the eyes of a pregnant
woman who is raped and forced into prostitution by a mob.

The protagonist of "Kya Hum Jinda Hai?" (Are We Alive?), a 23-year-old
pregnant Muslim, is raped and has her house torched by a mob which then
leaves her at a brothel.

But the heroine, Shayra, pursues justice against all odds, even using her
earnings as a prostitute to pay her lawyers.

"The most important aim of the film is to show the pathetic condition of
women during and after a riot," director Rafique Pathan told Reuters.
"Women have no role in starting a riot, but they are the worst hit."

Human rights groups say some 2,500 people, mostly Muslims, were beaten or
burnt to death in the western state of Gujarat five years ago, although
officials put the toll at about 1,000.

The riots erupted after a Muslim mob is said to have torched a train
carrying Hindu pilgrims, killing 59 people.

Pathan says some 600 women saw their husbands being killed, many had
their houses burned down, some saw their children being stabbed and
hundreds of them were gang raped.

"Do Hindu or Muslim women deserve this? This question is at the heart of
my film," said Pathan.

The 77-minute Hindi film, which also tries to delve into the psyche of a
mob blinded to all reason, steers clear of holding any community
responsible for the carnage.

In Gujarat, where cultural vigilantism is widespread, cinema owners
refused to screen an earlier film about the 2002 riots, reportedly for
fear of being attacked by Hindu zealots.

Cultural vigilantes claim such films shouldn't be shown because they can
create fresh trouble.

But Pathan hopes his film will give courage to women victims of the
rioting and help them lead a life of dignity.

Many viewers agree.

"Please see the movie. You will know what women go through during chaos
not stirred by them," said Tabassum Syed, a 45-year-old widow who lost
her husband and two sons in the riots.

"Kya Hum Jinda Hai?," now showing in Gujarat, will open across the rest
of the country later this month.

Retreat to the mountainside this summer

(chinadaily.com.cn)

Elsewhere

Tianshan Mountain, Xinjiang Ugur Autonomous Region, Northwest China

With a high altitude, Tianshan Mountain, located in Xinjiang Ugur
Autonomous Region, offers not only cool weather but also a distinctive
minority ethnic flavor with endless meadows and Mongolian tents, which
are rarely seen elsewhere.

Tianchi ("holy pond") is Tianshan's most famous scenic spot. It's a
crescent-shaped lake of crystal clear water. Tourists can also find some
Buddhist relics as well as dense spruce forests, trees of which are all
hundreds of years old.

If you travel there, be sure to take long-sleeve shirts as it is rather
cool in Tianshan. You can also bring some instant noodles if you are not
used to the minority ethic cuisine, which is spicy and mostly consists of
mutton dishes.

Wutaishan, Shanxi Province, Central China

Famous for its magnificent temples and history, Wutaishan or "five
platform mountain", it was often chosen as the preferred monastic
training venue by emperors and aristocrats in ancient China. And today,
Wutaishan's doors are open to visitors from around the world. Each of the
five main peaks boasts a beautiful and unique view.

Summer in Wutaishan is always raining, so visitors should bring umbrellas
or rain coats. If they want to watch the sunrise on top of the Eastern
platform, it is a good idea to bring a thick jacket to keep warm.

Lushan,
Jiangxi Province, Central China

Villas of various styles are located in Lushan as well as famous scenic
spots including the Lushan botanical gardens and a hill town called
Nianling. Nianling has Lushan's second largest man-made lake called Xihu.

As a Buddhist holy place, Lushan is home to a number of temples once
owned by ancient Chinese emperors and writers. There are also many famous
works of calligraphy and stele carvings in various places around the
mountain.

Changbaishan, Jilin Province, Northeast China

Translated as "forever white mountain", Changbaishan is a volcano and
boasts many unique, beautiful landscapes. On top of its main peak called
Baitoushan, or"white head mountain", there are many white fushi or magma
rocks, and snow throughout the year. The most famous scenic spot is
Tianshan Tianchi, a lake at the mouth of this volcano. The water is clear
and as blue as sapphire.

Changbaishan also has a natural museum for rare plants and animals,
including ginseng, mink and deer. These are sometimes referred to as the
three treasures of Northeast China.

Ving Rhames arrives at a film premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday, July
12, 2007.[AP]

LOS ANGELES - Two mastiffs at the home of Ving Rhames apparently mauled a
40-year-old man to death Friday, authorities said.

The victim, who hasn't been identified, had worked at the actor's home
for about two years and was responsible for caring for the dogs, said Los
Angeles Police officer Sandra Gonzalez.

Animal services seized four mastiffs, she said.

"Two of those dogs appeared to be responsible for the tragic death,"
Officer Jason Lee said. Several more dogs were left at the property.

Police got a call at 7:15 a.m. from someone reporting a dead body at the
home in Brentwood. Gonzalez did not know who made the call.

Authorities said the victim was found on the front lawn, and Lt. Ray
Lombardo said at a news conference later that the man had many bites and
scratches "which appear to be dog bites."

Rhames, 46, who appeared in the "Mission: Impossible" series of films,
was not at home when the attack happened, she said. The actor bragged to
Time magazine in 2001 that he had "eight Fila Brasileiro mastiffs 鈥 the
national dog of Brazil, also used by U.S. Marines in jungle warfare."

Calls to Rhames' agent, Steve Muller, were not immediately returned.

Pop star Prince kicks off rare set of London shows

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-08-02 19:15

LONDON - American popstar Prince kicked off his 21-show London tour at
the capital's O2 Arena Wednesday night with a medley of his best known
songs -- and gave away copies of his latest album to his fans.

The diminutive musician from Minneapolis, who opened the concert with
"Purple Rain", has claimed that the tour -- his only European visit of
the year -- will be the final time he will play his greatest hits live.

In a two-and-a-half hour set that marked his first performance in London
in more than a decade, he also sang "Kiss", "Girls and Boys", "Let's Go
Crazy" and "Nothing Compared 2 U", accompanied by two scantily-clad
female dancers.

The 49-year-old has said that, having prepared 150 songs for the 21
shows, audiences will hear a different selection every night he performs.

Audiences finally began heading for the exits after Prince's third encore
Wednesday evening, only to rush to return when he appeared in the middle
of the auditorium, and made his way back to the stage.

When he was back on stage, concert-goers were treated to a solo acoustic
version of "Little Red Corvette". Prince also covered "Come Together" by
the Beatles, and "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley.

All the people who attended the concert received a copy of the artist's
new album, "Planet Earth". The pop maverick gave away about three million
copies of the album with British newspaper the Mail on Sunday last month,
amid protests from music retailers.

Through his career, Prince has sold 80 million albums, and won six
Grammys and an Oscar, which he received for the music to the 1984 film
"Purple Rain".

Stars boost edgy documentaries at Toronto fest

Cast member Don Cheadle attends the screening of 'Talk to Me' at the Mann
Village theatre during the opening night of the 2007 Los Angeles Film
Festival, June 21, 2007.[Reuters]

Don Cheadle, Woody Allen, Liam Neeson and Michael Douglas will lend star
wattage to some politically charged documentaries at the Toronto
International Film Festival (September 6-15), organizers said Tuesday.

Unveiling its Real to Reel documentary program, comprised entirely of
world premieres, Toronto said it has booked Ted Braun's "Darfur Now," a
film in which Cheadle and five others issue a call to action to help stop
the genocide in the war-torn region of Sudan.

Also Toronto-bound is Peter Askin's "Trumbo," which uses spoken-word
performances from Neeson, Douglas, Donald Sutherland and Joan Allen to
recount the life of blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo; and
Nina Davenport's "Operation Filmmaker," in which Liev Schreiber invites a
young Iraqi film student to intern on the film shoot for the
Holocaust-themed feature "Everything Is Illuminated."

Other world premieres include Ellen Spiro and Phil Donahue's "Body of
War," a film about a severely wounded American soldier back from Iraq,
and "Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts," a biopic on minimalist
composer Philip Glass that features musical collaborations with Chuck
Close, Ravi Shankar and Woody Allen.

Other documentaries joining the Real to Reel party include Werner
Herzog's "Encounters at the End of the World"; Kevin Macdonald's "My
Enemy's Enemy"; Algerian filmmaker Jean-Pierre Lledo's "Algerie,
histoires a ne pas dire"; Dutch director Klaartje Quirijns' "The Dictator
Hunter"; and "Dinner With the President: A Nation's Journey" from
Pakistan's Sabiha Sumar and Sachithanandam Sathananthan.

Also booked are U.S. director Arthur Dong's "Hollywood Chinese"; "Iron
Ladies of Liberia," from American filmmakers Siatta Scott Johnson and
Daniel Junge; Variety film critic Todd McCarthy's "Man of Cinema: Pierre
Rissient"; and Parvez Sharma's "A Jihad For Love," an investigation into
Islam and homosexuality.

Rounding out the Real to Reel lineup is "My Kid Could Paint That" from
American filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev; Neil Ortenberg and Daniel O'Connor's
"Obscene"; Chinese filmmaker Weijun Chen's "Please Vote for Me"; Doug
Pray's "Surfwise"; French director Barbet Schroeder's "Terror's
Advocate"; and David Schisgall's "Very Young Girls," a film about teenage
prostitution in New York City.

Spice Girls announce new tour dates in China, US, Canada

(AFP)

LONDON - The Spice Girls announced new dates in China, the United States
and Canada on Friday as part of a six-continent, 14-night reunion tour.

(L-R) Spice Girl members Victoria Beckham, Mel C, Geri Halliwell, Emma
Bunton and Mel B pose for photographs before a press conference in east
London, June 2007. [AFP]

The British 1990s girl band, one of the most successful pop acts of all
time, will now play in Shanghai in China, San Jose in California and
Vancouver in Canada on the December 2007/January 2008 tour.

They have shelved plans to kick off the shows in Los Angeles, the adopted
home city of band member Victoria Beckham, whose footballer husband David
joined the LA Galaxy team earlier this month.

The first stop on the tour is now Vancouver on December 2.

It will then go to San Jose, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, London,
Cologne, Madrid, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Sydney and Cape Town
before ending at Buenos Aires on January 24, 2008.

The Spice Girls sold over 50 million records worldwide and scored nine
British number one singles, including "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life".

They announced they were reforming for a comeback tour last month but
have denied the move is financially motivated.

Some three million people have registered for a lottery for the chance to
buy tickets, which promoters set up due to high demand.

"We have just found out that we've had over three million ticket requests
on the website. As our own VB (Victoria Beckham) would say, that is
'major'!" the band said in a statement.

Fans can also vote for the band to come to their hometown on the website.

Chinese Pinyin - Stay away from the heat

? ?

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

Stay away from the heat

(chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-07-27 09:47

Summer is particularly hot in big cities. According to the ancient lunar
calendar, the last 10 days of July are the hottest days in the year. To
help city dwellers keep cool through this difficult period, here are some
tips to rescue you from the heat.

Drink the right liquids

Water is the best drink to quench your thirst in the hot summer and water
can always help you lower the risk of contracting heatstroke. All you
need is to remember the following do's and don'ts.

1. Boiled water is better than tap water.

2. Freshly-boiled water is preferable to water sitting overnight.

3. Drink water regularly-don't drink only when you feel thirsty.

4. When drinking water, drink it slowly than finishing a bottle all at
once.

5. If you think water is too bland, then add some salt, or have drinks
containing electrolytes. There are some popular brands in China such as
My Gator, Vitrum and Pocari Sweat.

Wear the right clothes

1. Wear light-colored breathable clothes. Those made from cotton or
polyester are the best.
2. In the daytime, don't go out with your arms bare. Long-sleeve shirts
give you more protection and keep you cooler because the cloth can
reflect some of the sunshine that would have been absorbed by naked skin.
3. Wear a light colored hat when going out under the sunshine to avoid
the sun's rays from shining directly on your head.

Have the right diet

1. Have more melons. Chinese cantaloupe is diuretic, Chinese okra cools
the blood, cucumber decreases cholesterol levels and pumpkin counters
inflammation.
2. Have more cooling vegetables, like tomatoes, eggplant, lettuce and
asparagus.
3. Have more bitter vegetables, like balsam pear, bitter melon, Kuding
tea, and bitter bamboo shoots.

Form good habits

1. When it's very hot, bathe your head and neck in cold water. This can
help take away some heat.
2. Keep an eye on your weight. When your weight falls for several
consecutive days, then you should take extra care of yourself. A sharp
drop in weight often leads to heatstroke.
3. Take more baths to keep the sweat from covering your body.
4. Avoid doing intense outdoor sports when the sunshine is strong,
usually between 11am to 2pm.

Pnyin - Kelly Clarkson apologizes to Clive Davis

Kelly Clarkson apologizes to Clive Davis

?

Singer Kelly Clarkson appears on stage during a taping of MTV's 'Total
Request Live' show at the MTV Times Square Studios in this Tuesday, May
8, 2007 file photo in New York.[AP]

Kelly Clarkson has done a lot of talking about reports of a feud with
Clive Davis over the direction of her new album, "My December." Now,
she's apologizing.

"I want to set the record straight on this by saying that I want my band,
my advisors, those close to me and my record label to be one big, tightly
knit family," the 25-year-old singer said Monday in a statement posted on
her Web site.

"Like any family we will disagree and argue sometimes but, in the end,
it's respect and admiration that will keep us together."

For months, Clarkson has weathered 鈥 and also fueled in candid
interviews 鈥 reports of a battle with Davis, who oversees her record
label, RCA, over the direction of "My December," which was released June
26.

"A lot has been made in the press about my relationship with Clive," the
former "American Idol" said in her statement. "Much of this has been
blown way out of proportion and out of context."

"Contrary to recent characterizations in the press, I'm well aware that
Clive is one of the great record men of all time," her statement said.
"He has been a key advisor and has been an important force in my success
to date."

Clarkson, who co-wrote every track on "My December," gives Davis kudos
for releasing the album when he wasn't obligated to do so.

"I really regret how this has turned out and I apologize to those whom I
have done disservice," she said. "I would never intentionally hurt
anyone. I love music, and I love the people I am blessed to work with."

A spokesperson for Davis didn't immediately respond Monday to an e-mail
from The Associated Press seeking comment.

"My December" 鈥 which has yet to produce a hit single 鈥 is No. 5 on
Billboard's 200 top albums chart; it arrived at No. 2.

Clarkson's first album, 2003's "Thankful," sold over more than 1 million
copies. The multiplatinum "Breakaway," released in 2004, cemented her
status as a bona fide artist outside of "Idol" with hits including "Since
U Been Gone" and "Because of You."

Weighty issue

Comments on Liu Shinan's column "Weighing the costs of luxury" (China

Excellent, simple commentary about modern-day waste. Hopefully, many
people will stop and consider your points.

Your concern can be rephrased in another way:

How to make the youth of China more productive by being innovative and
inventive, not just to cater for the growing sophistication in consumer
demands, but to resolve issues associated with social costs such as
pollution?

Along the way and with a bit of luck some new phenomena will be
discovered so as to herald a new age.

Mr Liu's article concerning cell phones is right on. I think the dubious
plot (forced/built in obsolescence) has been ongoing here in the USA for
hundreds of years.

Bob Hampe

Via e-mail

The cost of progress needs to be taken into account, but who is to say
its impact cannot be minimized through improved know-how over time.

As long as the expected benefits to society outweigh the total costs, it
would be okay for consumers to continuously demand higher quality goods
as well as services.

Learning Chinese - Filming begins on Tom Cruise movie

Filming begins on Tom Cruise movie

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-20 08:55

An undated photo provided by the Studio Babelsberg AG shows U.S. actor
Tom Cruise as failed German Hitler assassin Col. Claus Schenk Graf von
Stauffenberg in a scene of the movie 'Valkyrie' of which the shooting
began at the Babelsberg Studios near Berlin on Thursday, July 19,
2007.[AP]

Shooting began Thursday in a forest outside Berlin on a movie starring
Tom Cruise as Germany's most famous anti-Hitler plotter. The German
government said it was letting filmmakers shoot anywhere they requested,
except the former German general staff headquarters.

The so-called Bendler Block, where Col. Claus Graf Schenk von
Stauffenberg was executed by firing squad 63 years ago Saturday, was
off-limits, said government spokesman Torsten Albig, citing "the dignity
of the place."

Cruise plays Stauffenberg in "Valkyrie," directed by Bryan Singer.

The movie set was cordoned off with yellow-and-black plastic tape in a
pine forest near the village of Klein Koeris, 43 miles south of Berlin.
Studio Babelsberg, the film's German producers, confirmed that Cruise was
on the set.

The government's refusal to permit filming where Stauffenberg worked and
died led to controversy about whether the 45-year-old actor's religious
beliefs had triggered the decision.

Cruise is one of Scientology's best-known members. The German government
considers Scientology a commercial enterprise that takes advantage of
vulnerable people, and some critics maintain that one of its adherents
shouldn't be playing one of the Nazi-era's few heroes.

Albig said the decision not to allow filming at the Bendler Block, now a
memorial for Third Reich resistance fighters, had nothing to do with
Cruise's religion.

"We granted all permissions but the one, for the Bendler Block 鈥
because the dignity of this place should not be violated," Albig said
Thursday. "These circumstances show that the religious beliefs of the
actor are without relevance."

Stauffenberg and the other plotters of the July 20, 1944, assassination
attempt were caught and executed after Hitler survived the explosion at
his headquarters in what was then East Prussia.

"I can't imagine shooting it anywhere else but on location in Germany,
and I'm thrilled that we were able to get Tom Cruise to play Col.
Stauffenberg," Singer said in a statement released Thursday by the
Babelsberg studio, which is co-producing the film with United Artists
Entertainment LLC. The studio didn't comment on the controversy.

Refreshed after a surf of the airwaves

By Liu Jun (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-18 10:29

The audio system in our car stopped playing all CDs about a year ago.
Before we replace it, or the car, I've rediscovered the fun of radio
programs, a joy taken away by TV, Internet and busy schedules.

Auto Time (Qiche Shijian) at FM101.8 has two entertaining hosts - Zhang
Weidong and Dong Bin. They stir up good-humored jokes with the auto
dealers and mechanics they invite to the two-hour show. One minute, they
try to help a driver whose car trembles when he beeps the horn; the next,
they condemn the privileges that some rich people enjoy.

Another of my favorites is the culture channel (FM106.6) of China
National Radio. It first grabbed me with Harry Potter and the Order of
the Phoenix read aloud by a lady, who always pronounced Potter as
"BOH--t'er" and gave a strange emphasis to the other names.

At 5 pm these days, the channel airs Tale of a Southward Journey (Nan Du
Ji) about university professors and their families who had to flee
Beijing as Japanese invaders swept across the nation in the 1930s.

This autobiographic novel by Zong Pu is part of an epic which won the
prestigious Mao Dun Literature Award. The chief protagonist of the novel
is based on the author's father Feng Youlan, one of the nation's great
philosophers. While talk shows and hip hop music drive me crazy on the
forever jammed road, such audio novels always calm me down.

Back in college, I took a nap everyday listening to novels in Off the
Shelf with BBC. In high school, I would devour a big bowl of fried rice
my mother prepared for lunch, as the nation's top storyteller Yuan
Kuocheng described the gallant heroes in Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Often, my sister and I would wake up to the pleasant voice of Professor
Cai Wenmei: "Hello everyone, this is English on Sunday!" I used to
recount her mini-dramas to my classmates, but little did I foresee that
Prof Cai would teach me English years later. "Did you really like the
show?" Prof Cai asked me with joy, and borrowed a book of poetry for her
next program.

As I waited patiently everyday for Small Loudspeaker (Xiao Laba) that was
aimed at young children, I saw my father marking a radio schedule on the
wall beside his bed with red lines and blue circles, so he wouldn't miss
any broadcast about Peking Opera and comic xiangsheng crosstalk.

Then there were the loudspeakers - yes, long before we had our own huge
cubic radio, it was the loudspeakers on lampposts that gave us
information well, sort of.

Once, rumors floated that an earthquake would strike our area. Everyone
had to wear heavy clothes to stay up in the open field. As the adults
gossiped and the children frolicked, the broadcasters read political news
- on and on. Political meetings seemed to dominate the shows, until one
day, we heard two hosts talking about something else.

A listener asked: Is chicken egg a single cell? An egg is composed of a
shell, a membrane, egg white and yolk, just like a cell has the wall,
membrane, cytosol and nucleus. Are they the same? What a novel but
refreshing idea! With that, even a primary school student like me smelt
big change.

Erstwhile "King of Pop" Michael Jackson, pictured in 2005, has been
ordered to pay more than 256,000 dollars in overdue fees to a California
law firm, court records have revealed.[AFP]

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Erstwhile "King of Pop" Michael Jackson has been
ordered to pay more than 256,000 dollars in overdue fees to a California
law firm, court records have revealed.

The eccentric music legend, who is struggling to rebuild his career
following his acquittal for child molestation charges in 2005, must pay
216,837 dollars in fees and 39,177 dollars in interest, documents show.

The law firm of Ayscough and Marar sued Jackson on Feb. 21, 2006 in
Torrance Superior Court, just outside Los Angeles.

The firm was employed by Jackson for work connected to his sex abuse
trial two years ago. The case was moved to Los Angeles civil courthouse
last year at the request of Jackson's lawyers.

A judge ruled last month in favor of the law firm, with Jackson's lawyers
agreeing in principle to the judgement, which was signed last Friday,
court records show.

While baby Suri, who was born last April, opted for a casual ensemble
consisting of a smock dress and trendy Birkenstock sandals, her mother
chose style over comfort in a pair of three-inch heels and high-waisted
tartan trousers.

As the youngster took tentative steps along a grassy bank, the former
Dawsons Creek star watched on proudly, holding her hand all the while.

"When Suri was first born most people thought she took after Tom, but one
year on, it is most definitely Katie who she resembles," said an onlooker.

Nicole Kidman

Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman will produce and star in the romantic
comedy "Monte Carlo," the US entertainment press reported Tuesday.

Kidman, 40, plays one member of a trio of school teachers on holiday who
cut short their no-frills sojourn in Paris and head to Monte Carlo, where
they pose as wealthy vacationers.

The Australian film star, who was awarded a best actress Oscar in 2002
for her role as Virginia Woolf in the acclaimed film "The Hours," ranks
among Hollywood's best paid actresses, earning about 20 million dollars
per film.

Her new project, which is based on the novel "Headhunters" by Jules Bass,
will be directed by Tom Bezucha, who also is co-writing the script, along
with screenwriter Maria Maggenti.

Goodbye to Granny pants

Having lived and worked in New York in the film industry, Shiny Fang,
originally from Taiwan, is no stranger to lingerie. Not that women in the
New York film industry have any particular insight on lingerie, but women
in New York in general, with its popular boutiques - Victoria's Secret,
Pink Pussycats, and Bonne Nuits - know their underwear. Shiny herself
came to a point in her life (nearing the big 3-0) and wanted a change.
Along with a friend, she set up her own business choosing an unlikely
combination: Shanghai and lingerie.

Shiny thinks that underwear is still being "discovered" in China and
perceives a gap in the market. I would have to agree with her in that,
there seems to be an abundance of 'granny knickers' in Shanghai; in the
shops, on the washing lines and, most shockingly, on the people. Her
lingerie boutique was opened in January of this year, offering a
selection of non-commercial designer brands from the UK and America. By
non-commercial I mean, it's not your usual Calvin Klein, Versace or
French Connection; she sells labels such as Kenzo and Jimmy Jane, to name
but a few. And this is in keeping with her whole concept: to steer clear
of the commercialized industry, bulk sales and impersonal marketing of
lingerie. Her boutique is intimate, with carefully selected designs and
only perhaps two or three sets available of each.

The boutique is in an old fashioned building, on a quiet lane set back
from the malls, caf茅s and designer shops of West Nanjing Road. I
actually got a bit lost looking for it, but when I found it, it was like
a little hidden gem. On entering the boutique, or should I say boudoir -
yes, the dim and very fabulous lighting and deep purples throughout are
that of a boudoir - I was stunned. The carpets are soft on the feet (you
have to take your shoes off), the high ceiling with its intricate detail
and huge black and crystal chandelier is beautiful and overall there is a
very sexy, sultry atmosphere. The attention to details is apparent and
Shiny has definitely done nothing by halves. A lot of money has been put
into the business and it shows in these details.

Now I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not particularly partial to
changing rooms. You know the curtain ones that you can just about stand
up in, let alone change. And then the ones that only have a mirror
outside, so you have to leave your box, dressed like, well you don't know
until you see...yep not my idea of fun. Now the changing room at Lingerie
& Me is actually a room. Wow, a huge one at that, with a chez-lounge
against the wall, a beautiful dresser and a huge mirror. Shiny wanted to
create a space where people felt comfortable and at home trying things
on, a place where your partner or friend can sit in with you.

Lingerie & Me is not only the only lingerie boutique in Shanghai, it is
in fact on its own in China. She has created a private boutique, where
people can come and feel comfortable trying on and buying underwear. Her
clients are mainly expats and generally over twenty five, possibly
because of the prices. The cheapest thing you can buy sets you back about
680rmb. But those prices come with the label I guess, so if you really
want something that bit more special, something not every man and his dog
are wearing (and I should hope not!) then this is the place to come. The
staff are extremely friendly and speak with you on a very personal level;
they are trained to fit you, measure you and can also advise you on what
would be best for your shape or what you want. In fact you actually need
to know zilch about underwear! Shiny also speaks to her clients about the
designers themselves, so they have a better idea of whose creations they
are wearing.

This gem, I think, is yet to be truly discovered but I do think it is
going to be around for a while. (Once the culture here budges slightly),
this boutique will be buzzing. I only hope it manages to keep its charm
and secrecy, because a gem is always more pretty when it's hidden.

Director Francis Ng (left) stars in Dancing Lion with Lam Tse-chung and
Anthony Wong (right).

Local satire reigns with Dancing Lion, a funny but chaotic comedy that
puts the "Hong Kong" back into Hong Kong film. This film is filled to the
brim with the Hong Kong spirit. When times are tough, people become
creative in their attempts to make a living, and Hongkongers seem to be
experts in this area. When faced with life-threatening situations, they
often come up with brilliant, although at times, hilarious and even
unrealistic solutions.

In this film, Ah Kai (Francis Ng) and Ah Kao (Lam Tse-chung) face the
threat of retrenchment unless they can prove that they wield some
marketable talent. Uncle (Anthony Wong) inspires them to attempt to live
up to their family legacy and learn the lion dance. But before they could
get their show on the road, the company closes down. The dejected pair
plops down on the pavement wearing their lion suits, and they
unintentionally become the center of attention. Within minutes, they've
become an unexpected hit.

Things get out of hand as dancing lions swarm the streets of Hong Kong
until the government steps in with restrictions. Things get even worse
when they appear on TV and unwittingly reveal all their scheming and
scamming. Then, they encounter rival dancing lions. They lose everything,
including the true spirit and culture of the lion dance, and they again
need Uncle to set them back on the right path.

The cast is supreme, the lions are adorable, and the lion dance
performances are top notch. The dances in the film also feature some new
moves that are sure to wow audiences.

This movie is also riddled with cameos by artists, such as Ronald Cheng
and Chin Ka-lok.

A particularly enjoyable part comes toward the end of the movie, when
on-camera dialogues seamlessly fuse with off-camera bantering.

Cinema viewers have gotten used to having a good laugh at the end of a
movie when NG (no good) shots are aired, and this is definitely a
refreshing and enjoyable break from the norm.

The film's director and producer Francis Ng could care less about what
people think. Ng has always been known as a bit eccentric in both his
acting and filmmaking choices, and popular appeal has never seemed to be
a factor in his previous directorial efforts.

Ng and co-director Marco Mak manage to make Dancing Lion fun and clever
while ingeniously sidestepping any quandaries of narrative deficiency by
simply ignoring them.

Dancing Lion is running at cinemas citywide till the end of July.
